The area also has many superb visitor attractions including castles, ancient cairns, whisky distilleries, cruises on Loch Ness, the Caledonian Canal, and dolphin watching in the Moray Firth. And of course the area is fantastic for outdoor activities such as walking on the Great Glen Way or South Loch Ness Trail, canoeing, golfing, fishing, horse riding and mountain and road cycling.

Getting Here

People are sometimes surprised at how easy it is to get to Inverness here in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.

A 90-minute flight from London for example will land visitors at Inverness Airport.

Inverness is well served with transport links and with the airport just 10 minutes from the city centre it is easy for visitors from all parts of the globe to get here by air.

There are good road and rail links into Inverness from the south both offering the opportunity to enjoy fabulous scenery en route.

By Air – Flights to Inverness

Inverness Airport is located some 7 miles east of Inverness / 21 miles from Loch Ness.

Direct flights to Inverness with British Airways, KLM, Easyjet,  and Loganair are available to and from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton, Amsterdam, Belfast, Bristol and Manchester – many of which are international airports with global connections, and all flight times within the UK are under 2 hours.

Other major international airports in Scotland include: Glasgow, Aberdeen & Edinburgh.

By Road

The A9 is the main access road to Inverness from the south, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow and also from the north.

The A82 is an alternative and more scenic route from the south (Glasgow) via Loch Ness through the Great Glen to Inverness.

The A96 links Inverness to Aberdeen.

The B862 on the south side of Loch Ness links the small picturesque villages between Fort Augustus and Inverness, and also links to the A9 south to Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow and points further south.

The A887 is the main route to Inverness from the west coast and the Isle of Skye.

By Rail

There are regular train services to Inverness from most major cities and direct fast services from Edinburgh, Glasgow and London (including sleeper services).

Public Transport

A bus service operates every 30 minutes from the airport into Inverness city centre.

National bus companies including Megabus, Citylink, National Express & Stagecoach will take you from major British cities to Farraline Park Bus Station in the centre of Inverness.
